Happy New year. Hoping everyone had a good holiday time.
Do we as ADHD people, neurospicy, neuorodivergent fall under DEI? Diversion, Equity and Inclusion is such a complex, yet simple Paradigm, is it not? A paradigm is almost a quarter…..
How does competency fit into the DEI paradigm? Who is responsible for determining if someone has the qualifications for a job or position? If I am 6 foot 5 inches, and 280 lbs, should they hire me a horse jockey for the Kentucky derby to make sure we are inclusive and equitalbe? If we have neurospiciness, who is responsible to making sure we have the ability to complete tasks, interact with others and fit into a work enviornment? If you listen to my ADDA talk from 2021, you will see that we often are on the wrong race track, yet still try to fit into a carreer or position that isn’t working. My word picture for this is “if we have a race car brain and bicycle brakes, why are we so shocked we keep having car wrecks on Marathon race car tracks”
These answers will be different, I suspect for each individual, and situation. It is a complicated puzzle.
For me, my conclusion was to get off a race track, carreer that was a poor fit for my strengths and talents. Looking back, a better path would have been working in education or working in urgent care settings. My best choice at the time was to retire an retrain as an ADHD coach. YAY
Whether it is relationships or work or life in general, we have you asked ourselves: “How does this fit with my strengths and talents? Is it safe and effective to share my neurospiciness with friends, coworkers, partners or others? How can I ask for effective help, asssistance? for instance, could I have asked for part time work versus full time work as a provider? Is it OK to ask for people to point out if our interactions are appropriate or inappropriate and get feed back quickly? How is this situation benefitting my health? If I am struggling, is the struggle due to my neurospiciness, or are there other factors? How can I move forward? If I’m on the wrong race track, where is the off ramp or pit stop? Am I truly compentent in this role? How can I make changes to become more effective?
This is only the beginning for the questions we need to answer.
