An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure…… Hhhhhmmmm what does that mean, I wonder?
I went for my annual physical last week and the focus was on my cholesterol was a little high. My Blood Pressure was a little high. My BMI is a little too high, I’m overweight. That’s fair, but what about stress reduction, reducing our anxiety, reducing the inflammation in our hearts and minds with meditation or other stress reducing activities?
I wonder if our health care system spends too much time on the blood pressure pills and pills to reduce cholesterol, and not enough on life style choices? Now don’t get me wrong, we certainly should eat more fiber, strive for better weight control and consider medications for high blood pressure, cholesterol diabetes or other conditions. Vaccines have a role in preventing deadly diseases, for sure. But, what if we spent more time building exercise tracks and incorporating exercise into our daily routine? What if our commercials on TV were inundated with public service messages encouraging us to exercise, go to the gym, and take the time to take a time out for ourselves to rest and relax? What if our work enviornments had places for a quiet break? More to the point for those of us who are neurodivergent, What IF, we the neurodivergent people were able to share openly with our families, coworkers and others the challenges we have in our lives? What if people took the time to look at the core of each our human brothers sisters, looking beyond the superficail judgements we all place on other people, without knowing who they are?
HHHHHHHMMMM life style changes are the core of prevention also. The is list of life style changes is truly endless.
What will you do today, this week, this year to make changes in your lifestyle?
Yeah, I know, I’m an eutopian, Age of Aquarius type of guy. Just some thoughts for reflection.
“Count your age by friends, not years. Count your life by smiles, not tears. “
