As I have pointed out before a Paradigm is almost a Quarter, two dimes. New Paradigms are guideposts to change. STEER is an acronym for Situation Thoughts Emotions Execution and Results. It’s like me steering my boat in the picture. Sometimes we need to find a best path, best vehicle and best way forward. Sometimes it’s a boat, sometimes it’s an airplane. The possibilites are endless.
Sydney Allen, my coach friend and colleague specializes in coaching new nurses as they navigate the first year of their careers and also helps to guide other people going through transistions.
She is open to sharing so others might benefit from this tool.
Sydney shares with Us
“The STEER as a Thinking Framework is an amalgam of different thinking methods put together in an easy to use and remember format. I did not invent it, but was able to create a useful way to look at our thinking so we can identify old thinking patterns and create more useful ways to think to get the results in our life that we desire. We use it as a guide for clients in the coaching, as well as a tool for day to day use. For me, and many people, it has become an invaluable for both coaching and in my life. STEER is an Acronym for us to use in both professional and day to day life.” (Sydney Allen can be reached at (sydney@sydneyallencoaching.com)
The following is a brief review with examples of the STEER tool in practice.
S ituation
What is the situaion or dilemma? Examples might be, work is overwhelming. Or I’m always behind with my charting. Or My partner is bothering me as I forgot to shop. The list is endless
Try to be as succinct as possible
ie: writing book
completing household chores
T houghts
What are your thoughts? Examples might be “I can’t do this it’s impossible” or They made working here impossible. or My partner NEVER does anything around here
Again try to be as succinct as possible
E motions
What are your emotions. Examples might be Rage, anger, frustration, disappointmen the list is again endless
Always remember to embrace to positive too……
Sometimes it’s good to do a STEER with the negative then a STEER with the positive
E xecution
What are you doing now? What is a plan for future exectution or change? Examples might be “I’m going to talk with my boss about getting a scribe. Or I’m going to be less detailed and only chart the facts. Or I talked with partner about division of labor in our household chores
R esults
What is the result? What do you envision a possible outcome or result will be? Examples might be, “Wow my boss really understood and they are hiring a scribe” or Wow my partner agreed to do the dishes in the evening or Wow, they sent me to a class on how to utilize the EMR more effectively or Wow, I found out that my perfectionism was causing me to chart way too much energy on charting
Or I’m stuck and can’t do anything, I’m a failure
Or My partner and I decided to take turns washing dishes every other week
Or in My case, after much angst and soul searching….. WOW….. !!! I can retire from health care as I’m on the wrong race track, and become an ADHD Coach and a House Husband…. ( This was after many many many STEERs and reflections)
Often we might consider breaking up dilemmas with a STEER from our present “stuck” position then develop a STEER with positive possibilities and outcomes.
Blessings for happy adventures
