Join Bruce as he outlines some options. These are not Secrets
Last week the blog topic was there are no secrets. This weeks’ topic is that there are options. While there are no specific secrets or one secret sauce that works for everyone, there are options.
For me, I made the choice to invest the time and money to become certified as an ADHD coach.
As we discussed last week, the labels, therapies, coaching techniques, books, blogs are literally unlimited. We all must choose what works best for us. Today, let me share a few things that might be helpful.
Today I asked a friend what are some things that help you focus and stay motivated?
One of the methods is to use the puzzle coloring book to fill in the lines and develop a picture. This is the photo posted on today’s’ blog of a nearly finished puzzle. Do you see what is the subject in the picture? She tells me she spends 5-10 minutes at a time using a pen to fill in the lines. The reward is seeing the finished picture.
Another trick she uses is to pay herself a monetary reward for doing chores or develop new or healthier habits. For instance $10 for exercising, $1 for not going out to eat or $1-$5 for cleaning or doing chores in house. She has an accountability partner and she spends the money on luxury items every month.
In the end, so many people come to coaching and say, I need to know how to get organized, or I need to get my stuff together or I need to make more time for myself, for travel or I need to save for retirement or I need to find a profession that is fullfilling…… All these are really ways to expressing “How can I priortize my time and activities to develop a joyful life?”
Today we are watching the special about the Dali Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu celebrating their 80th birthday together. The message is to accomplish joy, give to others and choose to be happy, laughing and grateful. WOW…..!!!! that sounds so simple….. Here are men that have suffered through the loss of an entire country and exile and living through Apartheid, yet they are grateful humble and joyful.
There are some basic choices we can make as we seek to prioritize our lives.
1. We can choose to continue with whatever we are doing, even if it is painful or inconvenient. ( this is the choice many people choose for sure)
2. We can choose change, a little at a time.
3. We can choose to delegate things that we are not good at doing. ( For instance, hire a house keeper, hire a personal assistant, ask your kids or family to divide the household and yard work chores)
4. We can choose to make time to take care of ourselves
5. We can, by trial and error, develop new habits.
6. We can read books, blogs and choose to try a few new things, making slow progress. There are no one size fits all ways of doing anything. We can choose to try and try again to rediscover who we really are in life. This of course takes time effort and courage.
One of my favorite methods for clearing out the clutter in my room, office or garage is the Marie Kondo method (KonMari consultants). Basically, we choose to take everything out of an area (closet, tool chest, office, kitchen etc….), slowly sort through the stuff and choose to give away, sell or throw away what is left over. We only keep what brings us joy…. Sometimes, when I mention this people say, “I hate Mari Kondo”! But it is what works for me. You will have to try and then find what works for you and your personality and strengths.
There are literally hundreds of books that outline how to get organized. There are literally hundreds of coaches, coaching methods and paradigms available to choose from. There are new and old definitions of ADHD. Some common web sites you already be familiar with are ADD.org , CHADD
There are multitude of training programs for ADHD and other types of coaching. I am a graduate of ADDCA, (The ADD coaching Academy). There are certainly many other programs out there. ADDCA is very specialized and focuses all their energy towards helping people with ADHD.
For me, I made the choice to invest the time and money to become certified as an ADHD coach.
In conclusion, while there are no specific, one size fits all secrets, there are options.
If you will allow me to function as your coach, I will stand beside you, and help you find your path. Are you ready to embrace your inner child, and find and embrace your true self and adulthood?
It may not be simple, easy or clear but we can journey together towards a new you. There is not a one size fits all template for success. We can work together to find your strengths, talents and path forward.
